The Standard

Identify a numerical value(s) that is part of the solution set of a given inequality in one variable.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will represent a contextual situation using a linear inequality in one variable with symbols and graphs on a number line.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students substitute given numbers for the variable and decide whether the resulting statement is true. They identify all values from a list that belong to the solution set.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly test whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and negative numbers by substitution. They identify every value that works and explain why the boundary is included or excluded.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the inequality like an equation and look for only one answer. They often confuse < with ≤ and include or exclude the boundary incorrectly. Some compare negative numbers incorrectly after substituting.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: For 4x - 3 < 13, circle every solution from 0, 3, 4, and 5. Show one substitution that proves your answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs value cards and inequality mats; students substitute each card, then sort cards under Makes True or Makes False.

  2. Ask, “Is the boundary value always a solution?” Students compare x < 6 and x ≤ 6, then write a two-sentence rule.

  3. Run a card sort relay where teams match inequalities with candidate values that make each statement true.

  4. A club has $30 for six identical snacks; students test several snack prices in 6p ≤ 30 and identify affordable choices.
