Virginia SOL 6.NS.1.d
The Standard
Represent and determine equivalencies among decimals, percents, fractions (proper or improper), and mixed numbers that have denominators that are 12 or less or factors of 100 incorporating the use of number lines, and concrete and pictorial models.*
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will reason and use multiple strategies to express equivalency, compare, and order numbers written as fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and percents.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students represent the same value as a fraction, mixed number, decimal, and percent. They use number lines, objects, and drawings to decide whether different forms are equivalent.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly match and create equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and percents. They place each form at the same point on a number line and use a model to justify the match.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat 0.4 as 4% instead of 40%, or read 0.75 as 7/5. They may convert 1 2/5 to 3/5 by adding the whole number to the numerator. They may also place fractions by comparing numerators rather than their values.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to place 1 1/4, 5/4, 1.25, and 125% on a number line. Have them use a drawing to explain why all four share one point.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction strips and hundred grids to build 3/4, then label the same amount as a decimal and percent.
Ask, “Which does not belong: 0.75, 75%, 3/4, or 7/5?” Students write and defend their choice.
Run a card sort where students race to group matching fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, percents, models, and number-line points.
Display store discount tags such as 25%, 0.25, and 1/4 off, then have students identify matching discounts and savings.
