Virginia SOL 6.NS.1.c
The Standard
Represent and determine equivalencies among fractions (proper or improper) and mixed numbers that have denominators that are 12 or less or factors of 100 and percents incorporating the use of number lines, and concrete and pictorial models.*
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will reason and use multiple strategies to express equivalency, compare, and order numbers written as fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and percents.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match proper and improper fractions with equivalent mixed numbers and percents. They show each value with models and points on a number line. They use denominators no greater than 12 or denominators that divide 100 evenly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can convert 7/4 to 1 3/4 and 175%, then verify the equivalence with a model or number line. They explain that each form names the same quantity.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat 3/4 as 34% or 3% instead of finding an equivalent fraction out of 100. They may drop the whole number in 1 1/2, call 7/4 less than 1, or place 150% between 0 and 1. They may also shade unequal parts and count them as equal fractional pieces.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Convert 7/4 to a mixed number and percent, mark it on a 0-to-2 number line, and shade a matching model.

Ways to Teach It
Give students fraction strips to build 3/2, match it to 1 1/2 and 150%, then place all three on a number line.
Ask students to prove or disprove that 5/4 equals 125% using a diagram, words, and a partner discussion.
Play a matching game with cards showing fractions, mixed numbers, percents, shaded models, and number-line points; students justify every completed set.
Present a fundraiser at 1 1/4 of its goal and ask students to show the result as an improper fraction and percent.
