What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use grid paper, diagrams, or cut shapes to build the area formulas for parallelograms and triangles. They apply those formulas and add side lengths to solve area and perimeter problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain the area formulas by rearranging or combining shapes. They correctly find area and perimeter, choose the needed measurements, label units, and solve missing-measure problems.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse perimeter with area or use square units for perimeter. They may multiply the wrong measurements, omit the one-half in triangle area, or use a slanted side as height.
How to Assess It
- Give students a labeled triangle and parallelogram. Ask them to find each area and perimeter, label units, and explain which measurements they used.

Ways to Teach It
Cut a paper parallelogram, move one triangular end to form a rectangle, then record how the base and height stay the same.
Write a response to this prompt: Why is a triangle with base 8 and height 5 half the area of a matching parallelogram?
Sort problem cards into area or perimeter, solve each card, and earn one point for the answer and one for correct units.
Design a triangular or parallelogram garden, then calculate the fencing needed and the square units of soil it will cover.
