What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain that a symbol can stand for a number that is not yet known. They identify what a box, letter, or shape means in an equation or situation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a short situation, a student can choose a symbol for the missing amount and explain its meaning. The student can interpret different symbols without assuming only x can be used.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think x always means multiplication or that a letter's value comes from its alphabet position. They may name an object, such as apples, instead of the unknown number of apples.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “A bag had 12 marbles. After some were added, it had 31. Write an equation and explain what your variable represents.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Hide counters under a cup labeled n, then have students explain what n represents before revealing the counters.

  2. Display “24 books plus b books equals 60 books” and ask students to explain why b represents a number, not a book.

  3. Give pairs matching cards with word problems, equations, and variable descriptions, then have students find complete sets.

  4. Show a receipt with a $20 total and one covered price, then use p to represent and describe the hidden price.
