What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide which operations a story problem requires and whether more than one step is needed. They show the situation with equations, diagrams, or models, then calculate using a reliable method. They explain why their answer makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the needed operations and organize the steps in a sensible order. They calculate accurately with whole numbers and interpret remainders in context. They use an estimate or a second method to support their answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an operation from a keyword without considering the situation. They may solve steps in the wrong order, misalign place values, or ignore what a remainder means. Some give an exact answer that does not fit their estimate.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “A school combines 1,275 pencils with 325 new pencils, then packs 24 per box. How many full boxes and loose pencils remain?” Require an equation, estimate, exact answer, and written justification.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs counters, place-value mats, and story cards; students build each situation, write an equation, and solve it.
Post two solutions to a multistep problem; students choose the clearer method and defend their choice in writing.
Run a card-sort relay matching story problems to equations, estimates, exact answers, and remainder meanings.
Give students a $500 party budget and whole-dollar price list; they calculate equal snack packs and explain any money left.
