Math3rd GradePatterns, Functions, and Algebra

The Standard

Create increasing and decreasing patterns using objects, pictures, numbers, and number lines.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will identify, describe, extend, and create increasing and decreasing patterns (limited to addition and subtraction of whole numbers), including those in context, using various representations.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students create patterns that grow by adding the same whole number or shrink by subtracting the same whole number. They show each pattern with objects, drawings, numbers, and jumps on a number line.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a starting value and a consistent addition or subtraction rule, then generate accurate terms. Their objects, pictures, numbers, and number line jumps show the same pattern.

Common Misconceptions

Students may change the amount added or subtracted between terms. They may move left to increase on a number line or right to decrease. Drawings may not match the number sequence.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Create four terms of an increasing pattern from 5 and a decreasing pattern from 24, choosing one fixed rule for each. Show one with pictures and one on a number line.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups 30 counters to build five stages by adding equal groups, then rebuild the stages as a decreasing pattern.

  2. Post 24, 20, 16, 12 and ask, “How could you show this pattern with pictures and number line jumps?”

  3. Play Pattern Builder: students draw a start card and a rule card, make six terms, then trade with a partner to check.

  4. Plan theater rows with two more seats in each row, then represent the seating pattern with numbers, drawings, and a number line.
