What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students partition equal-sized shapes and line segments into equal parts, then identify one part as a unit fraction. They compare two unit fractions that refer to the same whole. They record each comparison with words and >, <, or =.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student builds or draws accurate area and length models with equal-sized wholes. The student chooses the correct comparison symbol and explains that more equal parts make each part smaller. The reasoning works across halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often think a larger denominator means a larger fraction because the number is bigger. They may compare models built from different-sized wholes or accept parts that are not equal. Some reverse < and > or rely on shaded size without checking the partitions.
How to Assess It
- Give students two same-length bars labeled 1/4 and 1/8. Ask them to partition and shade each bar, write 1/4 __ 1/8, then explain the choice in one sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs paper strips of equal length to fold into halves, fourths, and eighths, then order one piece from greatest to least.
Show 1/3 and 1/6 area models and ask, "Why does the fraction with more parts have the smaller piece?"
Play Fraction War with unit-fraction cards; students build each fraction on matching-length mats, place the correct symbol, and keep the larger card.
Cut equal paper pizzas into thirds and sixths, then decide which single slice gives a customer more pizza and justify the comparison.
