Virginia SOL 1.NS.3.b

Math1st GradeNumber and Number Sense

The Standard

Represent and name halves and fourths of a whole, using a region/area model (e.g., pie pieces, pattern blocks, paper folding, drawings) and a set model (e.g., eggs, marbles, counters) limited to two or four items.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will use mathematical reasoning and justification to solve contextual problems that involve partitioning models into two and four equal-sized parts.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students split one shape or a small collection into two or four equal shares. They name one share as one-half or one-fourth and explain why the shares are equal.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly divide shapes and small sets into two or four equal shares. They name one share and explain that the parts have equal area or equal numbers.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call any two pieces halves or any four pieces fourths, even when the pieces are unequal. They may judge sets by spacing instead of checking that each group has the same number.

How to Assess It

Give each student a rectangle and a picture of four counters. Ask them to shade one-fourth of the rectangle and circle one-half of the counters, then explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Fold a paper square into two equal parts, then four equal parts, and label one share after each fold.

  2. Show one equal partition and one unequal partition, then ask students to explain which model shows fair shares.

  3. Sort picture cards into halves, fourths, and not equal, then match each correct model to its fraction name.

  4. Plan how to share one sandwich among two children and four crackers among four children, then draw both solutions.
