What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read numerals from 0 through 120 when they appear in order or alone. They write the correct numeral when they hear a number and complete number sequences.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students read any numeral from 0 through 120 without relying on a number chart. They write dictated numerals correctly and continue a written sequence across decade changes, such as 98, 99, 100, 101.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse digits, especially in 12 and 21, or write numbers such as 43 as 403. Some can recite the count sequence but cannot identify a numeral shown alone.

How to Assess It

Show 47, 83, and 109 in random order and ask the student to read each aloud. Then say 62 and 115 for the student to write.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students numeral cards to place in order from 0 to 120, then remove five cards for partners to replace.

  2. Display 17, 71, and 107, then ask students to explain how each numeral looks and sounds different.

  3. Play numeral bingo by calling numbers from 0 to 120 in random order while students cover matching numerals.

  4. Use classroom locker or room numbers and have students read each numeral, then write three numbers they might see around school.
