What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize and name written numerals from zero to thirty, even when they appear out of order. They also write the correct numeral when given a number name.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly names numerals shown in random order and writes them from spoken number names. The student distinguishes look-alike numerals such as 6 and 9 or 12 and 21.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse digits, especially in 12, 21, and similar pairs. They may also name a numeral by counting nearby objects instead of reading the written symbol.
How to Assess It
- Show five mixed numeral cards from 0 to 30. Ask each student to name every numeral, then write two that you say aloud.

Show 14 and 24, then ask students to write or explain how they know which numeral is which.
Play numeral bingo using cards from 0 to 30, calling number names while students cover the matching symbols.
Take a school number hunt, recording numerals found on doors, clocks, calendars, signs, and classroom materials.
