What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read six-digit whole numbers and write them in standard, expanded, and word forms. They use each digit's place to move accurately between forms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately convert any whole number through 999,999 among standard, expanded, and word forms. They preserve zero placeholders and use correct place value language.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may omit zero placeholders, such as writing 304,052 as 34,52. They may also confuse place value names or use "and" when writing whole numbers in word form.
How to Assess It
- Give students 406,072 and ask them to write it in expanded form and word form. Check that both zeros hold their places correctly.

Ways to Teach It
Give students digit cards and a six-place value mat, then have them build and record numbers in all three forms.
Ask students to explain how 305,040 differs from 350,400 using place value words and expanded form.
Play a matching game with cards showing the same six-digit number in standard, expanded, and word forms.
Use city populations from a data table, and have students rewrite each population in expanded and word forms.
