What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain where the shorter hour hand sits at an exact hour and where it moves by the half-hour. They use phrases such as "on 4" and "halfway from 4 toward 5."
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an analog clock, a student identifies the shorter hour hand and describes its position accurately. The student places it on 7 at 7:00 and halfway from 7 toward 8 at 7:30.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the long minute hand with the shorter hour hand. They may think the hour hand jumps between numbers instead of moving gradually.
How to Assess It
- Draw blank clocks labeled 4:00 and 4:30. Ask students to draw only the hour hand and write one sentence describing each position.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a paper clock with a movable hour hand; call 3:00 and 3:30, then have partners place and explain the hand.
Show an hour hand halfway between 5 and 6 and ask, "Where is it, where is it going, and why?"
Play Clock Match: students pair time cards such as 9:00 and 9:30 with cards showing matching hour-hand positions.
Use a class schedule to compare the hour hand at 10:00 recess and 10:30 reading, then sketch both positions.
