What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize and name common tools used to track time. They match clocks with time of day and calendars with days, weeks, and months.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly name an analog clock, digital clock, and calendar from pictures or real objects. They explain that clocks track time within a day, while calendars track days, weeks, and months.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call every time tool a clock. They may think calendars show the time of day, or mistake a digital clock for a calculator.

How to Assess It

Show pictures of an analog clock, digital clock, calendar, and ruler. Ask students to circle the time tools and state what each tracks.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students sort picture cards of clocks, calendars, rulers, and scales into time tools and not-time tools.

  2. Ask, "Would you use a clock or calendar to find your birthday, lunchtime, or the day of a field trip?"

  3. Play Time Tool Bingo using pictures of analog clocks, digital clocks, calendars, and unrelated measuring tools.

  4. Examine the classroom clock and calendar, then list one daily question each tool can answer.
