What Students Need to Do: Students identify how indigenous traditions, migration, religion, and European colonization shaped languages, arts, settlements, and buildings across sub-Saharan Africa. They use maps, images, and short sources to explain regional differences.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can compare two places and connect visible features to specific cultural influences. They support each claim with evidence from a map, photograph, or source.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat Africa as one country or assume its cultures are alike. They may attribute every language or building style to colonization and overlook older African traditions. They may also confuse sub-Saharan Africa with North Africa.
How to Assess It: Show a city photograph and a language or religion map. Ask students to name two cultural clues and explain one likely influence on the landscape.

Lesson moves

Give groups photo, language, religion, and architecture cards to sort by region, then require a written reason for each match.
Ask students to write: How can one street scene show indigenous, religious, and colonial influences at the same time?
Play a clue-matching game where teams connect landscapes, languages, religions, and art forms to labeled locations on a map.
Compare current street views from Lagos, Nairobi, and Johannesburg, then list cultural influences visible in signs, buildings, clothing, and public spaces.
