What Students Need to Do: Students use photos, maps, and other sources to explain how beliefs, traditions, government, and economic change shape East Asian places. They compare examples from China, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can examine a shrine, rice terrace, historic wall, or dense skyline and identify the forces that shaped it. The student supports each claim with visible evidence and makes accurate comparisons among places.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat East Asia as one uniform culture or confuse Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shinto. They may think landscapes include only natural features, not buildings, farms, monuments, and city plans.
How to Assess It: Show a photo of a Japanese Shinto shrine and a Chinese rice terrace. Ask students to name one influence visible in each landscape and cite supporting evidence.

Lesson moves

Give pairs printed photos and labels, then have them sort temples, rice terraces, walls, and skylines by cultural influence and location.
Ask students to write: How can Confucian values, Buddhism, or Shinto beliefs leave visible marks on an East Asian place?
Play a four-corners game using China, Japan, North Korea, and South Korea as locations for projected cultural landscape clues.
Compare Google Earth views of Seoul and Pyongyang, then list how government and economic systems shape buildings, roads, and public spaces.
