What Students Need to Do: Students explain how schools helped formerly enslaved Virginians learn to read, write, and gain new opportunities. They identify that children and adults attended and that Black communities helped create and support schools.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students connect education with greater independence, work choices, community leadership, and participation in public life. They use details from a photograph, map, or written account to explain that connection.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think only children attended or that the federal government built and ran every school. They may also assume education became equal and widely available immediately after the war.
How to Assess It: Give students this exit prompt: “Name two ways Freedmen’s Schools changed life for African Americans in Virginia, and include one supporting detail.”

Lesson moves

Give groups replica photographs, school notices, and teacher accounts to sort for evidence about students, lessons, and school conditions.
Ask students to write why learning to read mattered to a person who had been denied education under slavery.
Play a cause-and-effect matching game linking school experiences, such as literacy lessons, with new opportunities, such as reading work contracts.
Map several Freedmen’s Schools in Virginia, then compare their locations with nearby towns, roads, and African American communities.
