What Students Need to Do: Students explain how the baby boom affected schools, housing, suburbs, jobs, and later services for older adults. They describe population shifts and explain how an all-volunteer military changed military service.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students connect each change to at least two effects on American life. They use census data, maps, or short sources to support clear cause-and-effect statements.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the baby boom means babies born during World War II rather than the large increase after the war. They may treat demographics as population size only or assume ending the draft ended military service and Selective Service registration.
How to Assess It: Give students three headings: baby boom, demographic change, and end of the draft. Under each heading, have them write one effect and one supporting fact.
