What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify changes in music, art, media, and communication during recent decades. They also explain how developments such as online banking, global business, and factory automation changed daily life and work.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can describe a clear before-and-after change and support it with a specific example. They can connect streaming, smartphones, digital payments, or automation to changes in American habits, jobs, or businesses.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list inventions without explaining how they changed behavior or work. They may also assume every newer development helped everyone or that cultural and economic changes happened at the same time.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to choose one cultural change and one economic change. For each, they must name the development and explain one effect on Americans.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a checkbook, ATM receipt, CD, newspaper, and smartphone image to order, then add one change caption to each.
Ask, “Which changed American daily life more, smartphones or online banking?” Students write a claim with two examples, then defend it.
Play a four-corner card sort for music and art, media and communication, banking, and business or industry, with students justifying each placement.
Trace an online purchase from digital payment through an automated warehouse to delivery, then identify the banking, communication, and industry changes involved.
