What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how laws and government policies restricted immigration, citizenship, work, and family life. They connect specific government actions to harm experienced by Chinese Americans and other immigrant groups.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students build a clear cause-and-effect explanation using evidence from a law, image, or personal account. They distinguish government action from private prejudice while explaining how the two reinforced each other.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think exclusion only prevented new arrivals and did not affect families or Chinese Americans already living here. They may also confuse discriminatory laws with individual prejudice or assume all immigrant groups faced identical restrictions.

How to Assess It

Give students a short excerpt from the Chinese Exclusion Act and ask: Name one restriction, one group affected, and one likely consequence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs law excerpts, testimony cards, and photographs to arrange into chains labeled government action, immediate effect, and lasting harm.

  2. Ask students to write: How can an immigration law affect people who already live in the country? Use two pieces of evidence.

  3. Play a cause-and-effect matching game with cards naming policies, restrictions, affected groups, and consequences for families or communities.

  4. Compare a historical exclusion notice with a current school nondiscrimination policy, then list three differences in rights, purpose, and language.
