What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why Virginia had a large population and strong economy compared with other colonies. They connect tobacco farming, available land, trade, and labor to Virginia’s influence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use facts about population and tobacco exports to support a clear explanation. They describe how wealth and population gave Virginia greater economic and political influence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all Virginians shared equally in the colony’s wealth. They may overlook how enslaved Africans and indentured servants supplied labor for tobacco plantations.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write three sentences explaining how tobacco and population increased Virginia’s influence. Include one cause and one effect.
