What Students Need to Do: Students listen closely, summarize another person’s view fairly, and ask questions before responding. They use facts to explain their position and disagree without insults, interruptions, or personal attacks.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can explain both sides of an issue without mocking or distorting either side. The student cites relevant evidence, answers the actual claim, and keeps a calm, respectful tone.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think respectful disagreement means staying silent or pretending to agree. They may misstate an opposing view, treat opinion as evidence, or attack the speaker instead of answering the claim.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: “Jordan says phones should remain available during class so families can reach students during emergencies. Summarize Jordan’s view, then respond respectfully with one relevant fact.”

Lesson moves

Place agree, unsure, and disagree signs around the room; students move, cite one fact, then accurately paraphrase a classmate’s view.
Ask, “Should schools limit student phone use?” Students state a claim, then write a respectful reply to an opposing view.
Give pairs viewpoint cards about a park proposal; partners earn a point for each accurate paraphrase and evidence-based response.
Read two public comments from a local meeting, then revise one disrespectful sentence without changing the speaker’s position.
