What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen to people who hold different views and identify what each person believes. They respond with relevant facts, respectful questions, and clear reasons without attacking the speaker.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can accurately summarize another person's position before replying. The student supports a response with evidence, asks useful questions, and disagrees without insults or interruptions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think respectful discussion means agreeing or staying silent. They may treat opinions as facts, misstate another person's view, interrupt, or criticize the person instead of the idea.

How to Assess It

Give students two opposing statements about phone use at school. Ask them to summarize one view, write one respectful question, and give an evidence-based response.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs perspective cards about a school rule, then have them sort each statement into evidence, opinion, or question.

  2. Discuss: How can you show you understood a classmate's view before explaining why you disagree?

  3. Run a role-card town hall where students earn points for accurate paraphrases, relevant evidence, respectful questions, and calm rebuttals.

  4. Read two local letters to the editor, identify each writer's claim and evidence, then draft a respectful reply to one.
