What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify who makes production and distribution decisions in market, command, and mixed economies. They explain how each system responds to scarcity and affects prices, choices, jobs, and access to goods.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can classify an economy from a short scenario and cite the details that support their choice. Given a shortage, they can predict how each system might allocate the resource and affect individuals.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a market economy has no government involvement or that a command economy allows no personal choice. They may assume mixed economies divide decisions evenly. They also confuse scarcity with poverty.
How to Assess It
- Give students a medicine shortage scenario. Ask them to explain who would decide its distribution in each economy and predict one effect on individuals.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups 20 supply tokens and three rule cards, then have them allocate food, housing, and medicine under each economy.
Ask, “Who should decide how scarce water is distributed, and what tradeoffs would each economic system create?”
Play Economy Sort: students place scenario cards under market, command, or mixed, then defend one disputed card.
Compare how prices, public transit, and school lunches are provided locally, then identify where markets and government each shape access.
