What Students Need to Do: Students choose among classroom options, mark one choice, and submit a ballot. They help count votes, identify the winner, and follow the group decision.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student casts a valid ballot without voting more than once. The student reads a vote tally correctly and accepts the result, even when another choice wins.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think they can vote more than once or change the count to help their choice. Some believe the teacher chooses the winner or that every option must receive the same support.
How to Assess It: Give students a three-choice ballot for a class brain break, then tally the votes together. Ask each student to name the winner and explain why it won.

Lesson moves

Let students nominate three class read-alouds, make paper ballots, vote privately, count the ballots, and announce the winning book.
Ask students to write: How should you respond when your choice loses a fair class vote?
Run a mock snack vote with students rotating through voter, ballot collector, counter, and results reporter roles.
Show a sample local election ballot and compare its choices, private voting, counting, and results with the class vote.
