What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that people receive money for doing jobs and may keep some for later. They connect earning and saving to buying an item or paying for help.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a simple story, students identify how a person earns money and why the person saves it. They can tell whether the planned purchase is a good or a service.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think money simply comes from a bank, store, or cash machine. They may confuse earning with saving or think saved money cannot be spent. Some think only objects cost money, not services such as haircuts.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit prompt: “Mia earns $2 washing a car and wants a $5 book. What should she do next, and is the book a good or service?”

Ways to Teach It
Set up a classroom store where students complete job cards, receive play money, and place some earnings in labeled savings cups.
Ask students to draw something they want and write one job they could do to earn money for it.
Play a matching game with cards showing jobs, earnings, savings goals, goods, and services.
Compare prices from a grocery ad and a haircut menu, then discuss how families might earn and save for each purchase.
