What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate common features in nonfiction books. They explain how each feature helps a reader find information or understand the topic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an unfamiliar nonfiction book, students can name each feature and explain its job. They use a feature to find a topic, notice a key word, or learn from an image.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a heading with the book title or think bold words should be read louder. They may view pictures as decoration and expect a table of contents to list every fact.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short animal book with all four features. Ask them to point to each feature and tell how it helps the reader.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs nonfiction books, sticky notes, and purpose cards to label each feature and match it to its job.
Show one page and ask, "Which feature helps you most on this page, and what does it teach you?"
Play Feature Hunt by naming a reading need while students race to hold up the matching feature card.
Examine a classroom cookbook and use its contents, headings, bold words, and pictures to locate and understand a recipe.
