What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find the beginning and end of a printed sentence. They recognize that the first word begins with a capital letter and the sentence ends with punctuation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can show where a sentence starts and stops. They can identify the first word, its capital letter, and the punctuation mark at the end.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the first letter of any word instead of the sentence’s first word. They may confuse a period with a dot or overlook question marks and exclamation points.
How to Assess It
- Give students one sentence: “The dog can run.” Ask them to circle the first word, underline its capital letter, and box the ending mark.

Ways to Teach It
Give students word cards and punctuation cards, then have them build a sentence with a capital letter first and punctuation last.
Display two sentences and ask, “How can you tell where each sentence begins and ends?” Record students’ clues.
Play Sentence Detective by having students find and mark capital letters and ending punctuation in a short poem.
Examine classroom signs or lunch menus, and have students point to complete sentences and name the clues they used.
