What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students tell whether a sentence gives information or asks something. They add a period, question mark, or exclamation point that matches the sentence’s purpose and feeling.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly sort short sentences as statements or questions and explain how they know. They write their own examples and choose a period, question mark, or exclamation point that fits.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every sentence that sounds excited needs an exclamation point. They may confuse a question with a statement or use a period after a direct question.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Label “The dog is wet” and “Where is my hat” as a statement or question, then add ending punctuation. Add the correct mark to “Watch out.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips and punctuation cards; students sort statements and questions, then place the correct ending mark on each strip.
Read “You found the puppy” with each ending mark, then discuss how the reader’s voice and the sentence meaning change.
Play Punctuation Corners: read a sentence, and students move to the period, question mark, or exclamation point posted around the room.
Find three sentences in a classroom notice or school newsletter, then name each ending mark and explain why it fits.
