What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify a text's main idea and trace how it changes from the opening to the conclusion. They connect examples, facts, and explanations to those changes. They use that pattern to infer why the author wrote the text.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can trace a main idea from the opening through the conclusion and point to details that clarify, limit, or strengthen it. The student can explain how that development supports a specific purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mistake the topic for the main idea or select a minor detail as the main point. They may list details without explaining how those details sharpen or change the idea. Some name a broad purpose, such as "to inform," without linking it to the author's choices.

How to Assess It

Give students a one-page editorial. Ask them to state its main idea, explain how one early and one later detail shape it, and identify the author's purpose.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut a short article into paragraph strips; students sequence them and label what each paragraph adds to the main idea.

  2. Have students write: Which detail most sharpens the author's message, and what purpose does that choice suggest?

  3. Play Detail Detective by giving teams evidence cards to sort into supports, refines, challenges, or unrelated.

  4. Compare two news reports about the same event and identify how selected details reveal each writer's purpose.
