What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students distinguish plagiarism from copyright infringement and explain possible academic and legal consequences. They gather information, quote or paraphrase accurately, cite sources, and follow copyright and license rules.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify direct copying, patchwriting, and uncited paraphrasing. They can use quotations, paraphrases, and citations correctly while explaining possible school, civil, or financial consequences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think changing a few words removes the need for a citation. They may also assume anything online is free to copy or that adding a citation permits unlimited copying.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students a short source and a flawed paraphrase. Ask them to identify the problem, revise the paraphrase, and add a citation.

Ways to Teach It
Color-code a printed source and student paragraph to mark copied wording, accurate paraphrases, quotation marks, and citations.
Write a response to this prompt: When can using someone else's work become both plagiarism and copyright infringement?
Run a citation repair relay using cards with quotations, paraphrases, source details, and missing or incorrect citations.
Check image licenses for a mock school newsletter, then choose one image and record the creator, license, and required credit.
