What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students map how an author moves from a main claim through reasons and evidence. They decide whether each detail fits the claim and whether the author provides enough support.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can identify the main claim, supporting claims, reasons, and evidence. They can explain where the logic holds up, where it breaks down, and what evidence is still needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat any fact or statistic as strong evidence, even when it does not address the claim. They may also confuse a repeated claim with a well-supported claim or assume one example is enough proof.

How to Assess It

Give students a six-sentence argument. Ask them to identify the main claim, label one piece of evidence as relevant or irrelevant, and explain whether the evidence is sufficient.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Print a short argument on strips, then have pairs arrange the claim, reasons, and evidence and remove any irrelevant strip.

  2. Ask students to write: Which claim is best supported, and what additional evidence would make the weakest claim convincing?

  3. Play Evidence Judge: teams label evidence relevant, irrelevant, sufficient, or insufficient and earn points by defending each label.

  4. Compare a product advertisement with an independent review, then judge which claims each source supports with enough evidence.
