What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students follow how an author builds an argument through specific claims and supporting evidence. They decide whether each example, fact, or quotation actually supports the claim.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can map the argument, claims, and supporting evidence in the order they appear. They can explain why each detail supports a claim or distracts from it.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every fact or example as relevant simply because it relates to the topic. They may also confuse the main argument with a supporting claim or personal opinion.

How to Assess It

Give students a short editorial and ask: Identify the argument, list two claims, and label each piece of evidence relevant or irrelevant with one reason.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups claim and evidence cards to arrange, then place unrelated evidence in a labeled discard pile.

  2. Ask students to write: Which evidence best supports the author's argument, and why is another detail irrelevant?

  3. Play Evidence Match, where teams pair evidence cards with claims and earn points for accurate explanations.

  4. Examine a product advertisement and identify its main claim, relevant proof, and details added only to attract attention.
