What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students show exactly which words a speaker said and punctuate those words correctly. They use quotation marks, commas, capitals, end punctuation, dialogue tags, and paragraph breaks.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students punctuate spoken words and quoted material accurately, including dialogue tags and end marks. They begin a new paragraph when the speaker changes and keep surrounding sentences grammatically correct.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place commas and periods outside quotation marks or forget commas near dialogue tags. They may also run multiple speakers into one paragraph, capitalize quoted fragments incorrectly, or confuse direct quotations with paraphrases.
How to Assess It
- Give students an unpunctuated four-line conversation with two speakers and one dialogue tag. Ask them to add capitals, quotation marks, punctuation, and paragraph breaks.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs cut-up dialogue strips to arrange, punctuate, and group into paragraphs by speaker.
Ask students to write six lines of dialogue that reveal a disagreement without directly naming the problem.
Run a punctuation relay where teams correct dialogue sentences on the board and explain each change.
Have students turn a short interview transcript into a news paragraph using two accurately punctuated direct quotations.
