What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen closely and respond to what others actually say. They use words, facial expressions, and body position to show attention. They follow shared rules for taking turns and responding respectfully.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student accurately paraphrases a classmate’s point before responding. The student asks relevant questions, builds on ideas, and disagrees respectfully. Verbal responses and body language show steady attention.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think listening means staying silent or making eye contact. They may plan their reply instead of tracking the speaker’s point. Some interrupt, change topics, or ignore agreed turn-taking rules.
How to Assess It
- In pairs, discuss, “Which detail best supports the author’s main point?” Each student must paraphrase the partner, ask one follow-up question, and follow turn-taking rules.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs listening cards labeled paraphrase, question, and connect, then have students use each card during a three-minute text discussion.
Ask students to write, “I knew my partner was listening when,” then compare which verbal and nonverbal behaviors helped most.
Play Listening Relay, where each student must summarize the previous speaker before adding one new idea to the group’s response.
Have groups plan a class event while using a posted agenda, assigned roles, turn-taking rules, and respectful disagreement stems.
