  Describe ideas within and between selections including how specific sentences, paragraphs, or sections contribute to the development of ideas.

  Compare and contrast one author’s presentation of ideas or events with another’s, identifying where the texts agree or disagree.

What Students Need to Do

Students trace how an author builds ideas across sentences, paragraphs, and sections. They compare two texts on the same topic or event, noting where the authors align or differ. They support their explanations with details from both texts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain how a sentence, paragraph, or section adds evidence, introduces a point, or connects ideas. They can compare two accounts and support each agreement or disagreement with accurate evidence from both texts.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize each text without explaining how particular parts build the ideas. They may treat different details as disagreement, even when both authors support the same larger point. They also may state that authors disagree without citing evidence from both texts.

How to Assess It

Give students two short articles about school uniforms. Ask them to identify one agreement, one disagreement, and one paragraph that develops a key idea, using quoted evidence.

   Cut an article into sections, then have pairs reorder the strips and label how each section develops the main idea.

   Ask students to discuss which paragraph could be removed without weakening the article, then defend their choice with evidence.

   Play Evidence Match by having teams pair claim cards about two texts with supporting quotation cards from each source.

   Compare a school announcement with a local news report about the same event, noting shared facts, missing details, and different viewpoints.
