What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write a summary, reflection, or description after reading. They select accurate details, examples, or quotations to support their thinking. They organize related evidence together in a clear order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state a clear main idea, description, or reflection. They choose accurate evidence and explain how it supports their point. Related details appear together in organized sentences or paragraphs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may retell every event instead of choosing key details. They may give an opinion without evidence or copy lines without explaining them. Some place evidence in the order found rather than grouping related ideas.
How to Assess It
- After reading a short passage, ask students to write one paragraph stating a main idea or reflection, then support it with two related details.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs claim and evidence sentence strips, then have them sort related evidence under each claim and explain their choices.
Ask students to write: What lesson does the character learn, and which two details best show that lesson?
Play Evidence Match by having teams pair claim cards with supporting detail cards, then reject one unrelated detail.
Have students create a library recommendation card that names a book's message and supports the recommendation with two related details.
