What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students respond to one or more readings by writing a summary, reflection, or description. They support their thinking with accurate details and examples, then use linking words to connect ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write a focused summary, reflection, or description that accurately represents the reading. They choose relevant details, explain how those details support their thinking, and connect ideas with words such as “because,” “also,” and “for example.”
Common Misconceptions
- Students may retell the whole text instead of selecting details that support one clear idea. They may give opinions without evidence, copy sentences directly, or use linking words that do not show the right connection.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage and ask: “What is the main lesson? Explain it in four sentences using two text details and two linking words.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips labeled claim, evidence, explanation, and linking word, then have them build a clear response paragraph.
After reading a story, ask students to write: “Which character made the best choice, and what two details support your view?”
Play Linking Word Match by pairing response sentences with cards such as because, however, also, and for example.
Read a school lunch announcement, then write a summary for an absent classmate using three accurate details and clear linking words.
