What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students state an idea about a story or informational text they read or hear. They support that idea with accurate details and explain how each detail fits.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student answers the prompt clearly, gives two accurate details, and connects those details to the answer. The response makes sense to someone who has not read the text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may retell the whole text instead of sharing their own thinking. They may give an unsupported opinion, copy a random sentence, or choose a detail that does not answer the prompt.
How to Assess It
- Read a short fable aloud. Ask, "What lesson does the character learn? Use one event from the fable to explain your answer."

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs event strips from a fable, then have them sort details into supports or does not support for a stated idea.
Read a short story, then ask students to write which character made the best choice and support their answer with two events.
Play Detail Detective by giving teams a claim and four detail cards, then awarding points for choosing and explaining relevant evidence.
Read two playground rule posters, then write which rule prevents the biggest problem and support the choice with details from the posters.
