What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break unfamiliar words into prefixes, roots, and suffixes. They use the meaning of each part to define the word and connect it to related words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use parts such as trans, port, and able to predict and explain a word’s meaning. They can compare related words and describe how added parts change meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume that matching letter groups always carry the same meaning. They may identify a prefix or root correctly but fail to use it when explaining the whole word.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: Analyze “inaudible” by labeling each word part, stating each meaning, defining the whole word, and naming one related word.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs prefix, root, and suffix cards to build real words, then have students explain how each card affects the meaning.
Ask students to compare transport, portable, and import, then write what port means and how the other parts change each word.
Play a matching relay where teams pair Greek and Latin roots with meanings, example words, and accurate definitions.
Have students collect words from food labels, signs, or headlines, then circle roots and underline affixes before explaining each word.
