What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students give a brief, organized talk and use purposeful facial expressions and body movements. They match each gesture or expression to an idea, feeling, or point of emphasis.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student gives a clear, organized talk with steady posture and audience eye contact. Gestures and facial expressions match key ideas without distracting listeners.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may wave their hands constantly or use gestures that do not match their words. They may look down, hide their face, or exaggerate expressions until the message becomes distracting.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student to give a 30-second opinion about school lunch using one planned gesture and one facial expression. Check whether both clarify the message.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs emotion cards and short statements, then have them test which facial expression and gesture best communicates each message.
Ask students to write where they would pause, gesture, or change expression in a three-sentence opinion and explain each choice.
Play Gesture Match, where students draw a sentence card, perform it silently, and classmates identify the intended feeling or emphasis.
Watch a short weather report, then list how the presenter uses hands, face, and posture to guide viewers.
