What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read two nonfiction texts about a shared subject, with at least one using literary elements such as scenes or personal reflection. They compare details, messages, and event patterns, then explain how the authors treat them similarly or differently.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify a meaningful similarity and difference between the texts. They support each comparison with accurate details and explain how each author presents the shared subject or message.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts from each text without explaining how the details connect. They may confuse a shared topic with a theme or overlook differences in sequence, focus, and point of view.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short passages about the same person or event. Ask: "Identify one similarity and one difference in how the texts present the subject, using one detail from each text."

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs detail cards from a memoir and an article, then have them sort the cards into Text A, Text B, or Both.
Ask students to write: "How does each author help readers understand the same topic differently? Use one detail from each text."
Play Evidence Match by having teams pair details from two texts that show a shared idea, different focus, or similar event pattern.
Compare an athlete's personal essay with a news profile, then discuss how purpose and point of view shape the details included.
