The Standard

Use reading strategies as needed to aid and monitor comprehension when encountering challenging sections of text. These sense-making strategies attend to common organizational text structures, summarizing, asking questions of the text, and others (Reading Strategies 3-12).

Virginia Standards of Learning for English · The student will build knowledge and comprehension skills from reading a range of challenging, content-rich texts. This includes fluently reading and gathering evidence from grade-level complex texts, reading widely on topics to gain purposeful knowledge and vocabulary, and using reading strategies when comprehension breaks down.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice when a difficult passage stops making sense. They choose a useful response, such as rereading, identifying structure, summarizing, or asking a question, then check whether it helped.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can mark where meaning breaks down and choose a strategy that fits the problem. They can explain how rereading, questioning, summarizing, or noticing text structure improved their understanding.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reread the same words without changing their approach. They may include every detail in a summary or ask questions that the text cannot answer.

How to Assess It

Give students one challenging paragraph. Ask them to underline a confusing part, name the strategy they used, and write what they understand now.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs scrambled paragraph strips to arrange, then have them label signal words and explain the text structure.

  2. After a dense paragraph, write: “Where did meaning break down, which strategy did you use, and what do you understand now?”

  3. Play Strategy Match by pairing reading problems, such as unknown words or confusing order, with useful actions.

  4. Read game directions or a school notice, then mark confusing sections and apply one strategy before explaining the message.
