What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students tell whether a text tells a story, explains information, or states an opinion. They identify how events, facts, claims, and reasons are arranged to match the writer’s goal.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly label a short piece as narrative, expository, or opinion. They point to features such as event order, grouped facts, or a claim with reasons and explain how those features fit the writer’s goal.

Common Misconceptions

Students may identify the form by its topic instead of its structure. They may also confuse an opinion with a fact or expect every piece to follow time order.

How to Assess It

Give students three short paragraphs, one narrative, one expository, and one opinion. Ask them to label each and underline the clues that show its organization.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs mixed sentence cards from three texts, then have them sort and arrange each text using its likely organizational pattern.

  2. Ask students to explain how a story, an animal report, and a book review would be organized differently.

  3. Play Structure Detective by reading short passages and awarding points for naming the form and citing an organizational clue.

  4. Compare a recipe story, a factual recipe guide, and a restaurant review to see how each writer organizes ideas for a different goal.
