3.RL.1 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the story’s thematic topic and explain the lesson learned. They use plot events to name the central conflict, resolution, and summary. They describe character traits, motivations, feelings, and changes.

Students summarize the plot using the central conflict, key events, and resolution. They identify a thematic topic and lesson, then support a character’s traits, motivations, feelings, and growth with story details.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a topic, such as friendship, but not explain the lesson about it. They may confuse the conflict with one small problem or list traits without showing how the character changes.

How to Assess It

Use an exit ticket after a short story: Name the conflict and resolution, then explain the lesson and one way the main character changes.

   Give pairs plot event cards to sort into conflict, key events, and resolution, then have them explain their sequence.

   Ask students to write: What lesson does the character learn, and which two events best show that lesson?

   Play Character Evidence Match by pairing trait, motivation, and feeling cards with supporting details from a shared story.

4. 04

   Read a story about a team disagreement, then connect its conflict, resolution, and lesson to a real classroom or playground situation.
