What Students Need to Do

Students give an organized oral report, story, or personal recount. They use relevant facts and descriptive details. They speak clearly and adjust their words, tone, pace, and volume for the audience and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student presents ideas in a clear order and includes facts or descriptive details that support the main point. The student speaks clearly, uses steady pacing and expression, and chooses language suited to the audience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list facts or events without connecting them to a main idea. Some speak too quickly, too quietly, or with little expression. Others use the same casual language for every audience.

How to Assess It

Ask students to give a one minute report about a favorite place, including two supporting details. Check organization, word choice, volume, pacing, and expression.

   Give pairs four picture cards to sequence, then have each student tell the story using two sensory details.

   Ask, “How would you describe the same playground accident to a friend and the principal?” Students compare word choice and tone.

   Play Detail Detective: speakers give a one minute report, while listeners tally facts, descriptive details, and clear links to the main idea.

   Have students record a 45 second school announcement about an upcoming event, using clear facts, steady pacing, and an appropriate voice.
