What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students shape short pieces for different jobs, such as telling what happened, teaching about a topic, or persuading a reader. They organize ideas and add useful details. When writing about a reading, they explain their thinking and point to details that support it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a focused piece with a clear beginning and ideas that fit the purpose. Narratives follow a sensible order, explanations use accurate facts, and opinions include connected reasons. Responses to reading use two relevant details from the text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list events without showing their order or adding details about people and actions. They may give opinions without reasons, or facts that do not explain the topic. When responding to reading, they may retell the whole text instead of choosing details that support their thinking.
How to Assess It
- After a read-aloud, ask, “Was the character’s choice a good one? Write your opinion and support it with two details from the story.”
