What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write about one event or a short sequence in a clear order. They add character actions, thoughts, or feelings and use time words such as first, later, and finally.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A strong piece presents events in an order the reader can follow. It names the characters, adds specific actions or feelings, and uses time words to connect events.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list events without adding actions, feelings, or other character details. They may jump out of order or use “then” for every transition.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Write five sentences about a time you solved a problem. Include who was there, three time words, and two character details.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs four picture cards showing a lost dog story. Students order them, retell the events, then write the sequence.
Ask, “What happened before, during, and after a surprising moment?” Students tell a partner, then draft with character actions and feelings.
Play Time-Word Sort. Students match first, meanwhile, later, and finally to sentence strips, then explain each placement.
Write a short account of a class event for the school newsletter, naming people, actions, and the order of events.
