What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write a real or imagined narrative, or reshape a familiar text with a new viewpoint, scene, or ending. They order events clearly, develop characters, and use exact details, action verbs, and transitions to control pace and sequence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A strong narrative has a clear beginning, development, and ending, with each event leading naturally to the next. Characters respond believably, and precise language helps readers picture the action.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list events without building a scene or showing character reactions. They may overuse vague verbs, add transitions mechanically, or change an existing story without keeping key details consistent.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Rewrite a familiar scene from another character’s viewpoint in 150 words. Include a clear sequence, three precise action verbs, and two transitions.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups event cards from a short scene, and have them arrange the sequence and add precise verbs to each card.
Ask students to rewrite a familiar story’s ending, then explain how their changes affect one character’s choices.
Play a transition relay where teams place words such as meanwhile, later, and suddenly into gaps in a scrambled narrative.
Turn a school event into a short podcast script that uses clear sequence, character reactions, and vivid action.
