What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students trace how an author orders, introduces, develops, and connects ideas or events. They compare how different informational texts present material and interpret data displays. They also judge claims by checking the logic, relevance of evidence, and accuracy of statements.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can map how a writer introduces, develops, and connects ideas or events. They can explain what a map, chart, graph, timeline, table, or diagram adds to the text. They can identify claims, test the reasoning, and point out irrelevant, weak, false, or missing evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize the order of points without explaining how that order shapes the analysis. They may treat any fact as relevant evidence or assume a chart proves a claim without checking its scale, labels, source, or context. They may also confuse a weak argument with an opinion they personally dislike.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article with one chart. Ask them to explain how two ideas connect, interpret one data point, and decide whether a named claim has relevant, sufficient evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups paragraph cards from an article and have them arrange the ideas, then defend the order using transition words and connections.

  2. Use the prompt, “Which claim is best supported, and what specific evidence makes the reasoning valid or weak?”

  3. Run an Evidence Sort Relay where teams label cards as relevant, irrelevant, sufficient, insufficient, factual, or unsupported for a stated claim.

  4. Compare a local weather alert with its forecast map, then explain how the visual data supports or complicates the written warning.
